Ardith Mae Farmstead Goat Cheese is looking for our 2016 and 2017 apprentices.
Ardith Mae Farm is situated in the picturesque part of Columbia County, within a 5 minute walk of the River Hudson, and a 30 minute drive to the nearest town of Hudson, NY. Here on this beautiful and scenic 80 acre farm we are fortunate enough to have blended two separate businesses and farms on one property. We not only share a farm but we share the symbiotic relationship between an organic vegetable growers and a dairy farm.
Ardith Mae Farm is an Animal Welfare Approved dairy where we rotationally graze the herd on organic pastures and treat our animals with respect and care for them holistically. Our dairy produces over 8 different varieties of pasteurized french style goat cheese, year round.
The on farm community consists of 8-10 folks (owners, staff and apprentices included) all working diligently towards the common goals of the farm. We do farm full time and distribute our products to farmers markets both here (upstate NY) and to NYC. We farm using tractors, animals and hands - all are needed to hep continue the sustainable approach to growing that we all believe in here.
Apprentices need to be hard working, enthusiastic, organized and determined, work in all weather conditions and lift 50 pounds on a regular basis.
We are seeking apprentices to work with us and the whole farm staff in all aspects of production.
The Goat dairy is also seeking interested apprentices to assist in the whole cycle including but not limited to: breeding, freshening, milking, cheese making, daily care of animals, grazing and fencing. If milking and/or working in the cheese room, you MUST be very sanitary, aware of and open to learning about proper milk handling and milking procedures. We require people to be very clean and detailed oriented.
Both the vegetable and animal sides of the farm require strong bodies, minds and souls, with much repetition and often heavy lifting involved - be it winter squash or 50# bags of grain.. farming is physically demanding
A normal week of work consists of 40-50 hours of work over a 5-6 day work week depending on season and the farms workload. Usually one of these work days will be a Farmers Market day.
Accepted applicants will receive a share in the weekly harvest of produce, milk, cheese and other foods available from the farm, in addition to a weekly stipend to be determined based upon experience and level of responsibility.
The living space is a 12x16 cabin that is ideally for a couple, (but not limited to) that is on the farm for 3-4 seasons. The couple will split their time between vegetable production and the dairy. By the barn, there is shared bathroom, shower and clothes washing facilities available to all who live here - and consequently the cleaning and upkeep of those is also a shared responsibility. These facilities are within a few hundred feet of the apprentice cabin. Apprentices will be expected to cook and clean for themselves, have a clean drivers license and their own transportation.
We do have 7 dogs here so we require that apprentices have no children or pets out of consideration for the farm as a whole.
Only serious applicants who are ready to be an apprentice need apply.
You must be able to come to the farm for an interview which includes a a full working day.
To apply please send a resume and a brief response to the following questions:
Why do you want to work and live on a farm?
Your farming/physical activity experience with references.
What are you most excited or curious about learning?
